America is now undergoing one of the tightest labor markets in history and several state that the nation is currently facing a skills gap. As stated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the U.S. currently has over 7 million unfilled jobs.

This tight labor market has led many businesses to become more open-minded when considering candidates. Businesses including Google, Apple, IBM and Bank of America no more require applicants to have a college diploma.

Instead of emphasizing the need for specific names and experience, organizations are changing towards a focus on the skills that a potential employee can deliver. At technology firms like Facebook, this is particularly correct.

“Skills really matter the most,” Janelle Gale, Facebook’s vice president of human resources, tells CNBC Make It.

Her advice for employees interested in landing a job at an organization like Facebook would be to concentrate on skills and apply — even if your resume doesn’t exactly match the project description.

“We actually value abilities over experience in the grand scheme of things,” she says. “Employ in case you have the relevant skills even in the event that you don’t have the right experience, since we’re looking underneath the surface for what’s really going to matter here and that is what abilities you can bring to the table.”

LinkedIn recently examined hundreds of thousands of job postings in order to determine which skills businesses need most in 2022. They discovered that companies are looking for employees with both soft skills and hard technical skills and paired these skills with LinkedIn Learning classes that are free for the month of January.

Creativity and cloud computing came initially as the very in-demand soft and hard skills in 2022, based on LinkedIn.

Based on Paul Petron, editor of LinkedIn Learning, this year’s record reveals a change in companies’ priorities.

“Interestingly, the newcomers into our record proved uniquely human traits: Among soft skills, creativity and adaptability joined the list for the very first time, and one of challenging skills, people management was a new inclusion,” he informs CNBC Make It through email.

“While digital abilities like cloud computing and artificial intelligence topped the record of challenging skills businesses need most, the emergence of these 3 new skills suggests that employers recognize the importance of adopting modern technologies as well as recognizing those things technology can’t do: connect with different people, engage in out-of-the-box thinking and rapidly adapt to new priorities or issues .”

By paying attention to in-demand skills such as these, employees can make sure they stay in-demand among companies.
